I am a blogger now!

“Social media has changed the dynamics of learning. Knowledge is being shared and disseminated in real time. If following can’t convince you, be ready to miss the chance to reach millions”:

Social Media is the #1 activity on the web| 25% of search results for the World’s Top 20 largest brands are links to user-generated content| 2.10 billion internet searches | 34% of bloggers post opinions about products & brands | Facebook has more internet traffic than Google | YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world | 80% of companies use social media for recruitment | Facebook has over 600 million active users | There are more than 200 mobile operators in 60 countries working to deploy and promote Facebook mobile products | There has been a 182% increase in Twitter mobile users this past year.

Above are the words of one of my best friends, Hammad Siddiqui, who has been trying to convince me since July 2009 to start blogging – writing and sharing my academic, managerial and entrepreneurial experiences with masses. He asked it again last month, when sitting in Karachi, I was enjoying coffee and donuts with him discussing the global business challenges.

My response was – “I should try to concentrate on what I can do best. I have journal articles and case studies to my credit, I have written a few book chapters and a monograph on entrepreneurship and plan to have more scholarly publications”. “Yes, you write journal articles based on theoretical framework and academic references – only for academia and students who are interested to read, if any, he replied with a suggestive smirk. I left Karachi, considering this as an option to integrate my experience of having worked with a dynamic community of entrepreneurs across the globe.

After contemplating about it for almost a month, reading blogs, and talking to a number of bloggers – The quote that struck me the most is by Jeff Antaya, Chief Marketing Officer of Plante Moran:

“Social media is like a snowball rolling down the hill. It’s picking up speed. Five years from now, it’s going to be the standard.”

I am now convinced that I do not want to stay out of the league – I have a lot to share – with my students, colleagues, and entrepreneurs (to be) about my journey of learning and scholarship. So, watch out this space, I am a blogger now!
